What to Expect From Your Massage
Your Massage Is Tailored To You
Every massage therapist is different. They follow similar traditions, but apply them in their own way. Depth of pressure, speed of strokes, as well as the use of knuckles and elbows can vary from therapist to therapist. Regardless of that, your treatment will be tailored to you.
Massage improves circulation in muscles and joints through the stimulation of tissues by way of applying pressure in a particular way. This promotes the release of folic acid from the muscle to alleviate pain. In improving circulation, massage can increase the nutrient supply to the affected area, aiding in the healing process.
The mental or neurological benefits come through the stimulation of the nerve clusters throughout the body. When muscles tighten up, these clusters are covered by the muscle. As treatment progress muscles loosen up and the cluster are again exposed. They send signals to the brain to release endorphins - a hormone associated with relaxation.
A Brief History of Massage Therapy
Its Origins Trace Back More Than A Thousand Years
Can you imagine what it must’ve been like to discover the healing benefits of massage? This is an ancient technique developed at a time when doctor referrals, x-rays, and scans weren’t even a thought. Massage therapy was believed to have originated within the hindu culture around 4500 BCE, possibly earlier. It was part of the ayurvedic (sanskrit for life health) practice of medicine.
Massage continued to evolve, taking elements from cultures to which it was introduced. It was in the early 19th century that it made its most significant step forward. Per-Henrik Ling, said to be the father of Swedish gymnastics pioneered what was known as the Swedish movement technique. The type of massage therapy he introduced is still practised: the Swedish technique he pioneered is still around today.
It was a part of a larger program he created at the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics, applying movement as a treatment for the ill. That program laid the groundwork for modern physiotherapy.
